1981 Continued
In 1981 Monk switched from KORK AM to KNPR FM to continue his "Reality of Jazz"
radio show in a two-hour program. KNPR was broadcasting jazz sounds seven nights
a week.
The Art Pepper (far left) Quartet headlined an October 30 LVJS concert, An Evening
of Small Group Jazz, which also featured guitarist Howard Roberts' group and
vocalist Marlena Shaw (left) backed by Webster Lewis, piano; Mel Lee, drums;
and Bob Badgley, bass, in the Dunes' Crown Jewel Room.
One thousand ticket-holders filled the Dunes' Crown Jewel for the final LVJS
jazz concert of 1981 with Maynard Ferguson (left, with Monk Montgomery) and
his Orchestra, opened by the Billy T Trio, December 2.
Before the close of 1981 the Society held a Jazz Record Swap Meet December 6
at its Paradise Road headquarters so members could upgrade their collections
by trading, buying or selling below retail.
